AutoSock: textile wheel covers

AutoSock is the high tech solution to an age old problem - How to give road tyres the grip they need on ice and snow to .. Get you home!!
AutoSock Products link : http://astore.amazon.com/autosock-20

AutoSock - textile wheel covers with an elasticated edge; you just slip them over the driving wheels when you find yourself getting stuck. ("Yes - it really is this easy" and "Yes, of course they work!") Be prepared for the winter by carrying a set of AutoSock in your car, happy in the knowledge that

-fitting them is easy. If you can pull a sock over your foot you can push a fabric cover over a wheel.
-fitting them requires no practice.
-they weigh less than 1kg and take up minimal space. It's sensible to keep them with the spare wheel, always ready for use.
-they are relatively universal, i.e. one size fits over 60% of cars.
-they're reusable again and again - providing value for money for years to come.
-they work!

Probably the most difficult part of the operation is remembering that they're there!

AutoSock provides an ideal "Get me Home" or "Get me to that meeting" solution - but only if you keep a set in the car! Although developed in Norway, they're particularly appropriate for the UK, where we experience sudden and sporadic snow fall, usually short lasting, but so often the cause of massive disruption and inconvenience while it lasts.

Most of us take our chances because, all things considered, it's hard to justify the use of winter tyres, and carrying snow chains is "over the top". The good news is that tests show AutoSock to be more effective than winter tyres, with the further benefit that you only fit them when you need them.

The Tire Rack recommends that drivers who normally encounter recurrent snow and ice during wintertime fit their vehicles with dedicated winter tires. However there also are drivers in areas outside of America's snow belt where the roads are rarely, if ever covered with snow or ice. Unfortunately these drivers face very perplexing problems when a freak snow or ice storm catches them off guard! Additionally the growing use of summer tires for Original Equipment (O.E.) applications, as well as for upgrading replacement tires, has stranded more than one motorist caught by unexpected snow or ice.

Temporary Winter Traction Aid for Vehicles (Autosock product)
AutoSock is a proven temporary winter traction aid that is now available in America for a wide range of vehicles. Tests carried out by European car manufacturers and independent road and transport research institutes have confirmed that AutoSock increases traction on snow and ice substantially over summer tires.
Developed in Norway and TÜV-approved in Germany, AutoSock is lightweight and made from 100% high-technology fibers that stick to snow and ice. These fibers, which are intended to fray with use, are arranged in a specific pattern to optimize their grip. The specially developed textile also has the ability to process the water film often found between the tire and an icy or snowy road generated by heat from the sun, vehicle load or wheel spin.
Because vehicles need the ability to stop and turn as well as accelerate in slippery conditions, The Tire Rack recommends that AutoSock be installed in sets of four. AutoSock is sold in pairs to accommodate vehicles with staggered wheel and tire fitments (different sizes on their front and rear axles).

Comfortable While Driving – Maximum Speed 30 Miles per Hour (mph)
AutoSock does not produce the loud rattling nor the bumpy ride associated with snow chains. AutoSock does not damage the vehicle structure or alloy wheels and are approved for speeds up to 30 mph (50km/h). Nevertheless, the driver's speed should remain appropriate for the weather and road conditions.
In What Sort of Conditions Can AutoSocks Be Used?
AutoSock will greatly enhance traction on snowy or icy surfaces. It is recommended that AutoSock be removed when the vehicle returns to roads where no snow or ice is present. Driving on dry or wet roads is not recommended as it increases fabric wear considerably.
Simple to Install and Remove Even in Cold Weather
Stop the vehicle and apply the parking brake. The vehicle must not be on a slope during installation. The AutoSock is pulled over the top of the tire and downwards as far as possible. Then the vehicle is moved forward or backward about one yard, and the remainder is pulled into position. AutoSock will automatically center when driving begins. The same basic directions apply if the vehicle is already stuck, however only a small amount of wheel spin is used instead of moving the car in that case.
What About When AutoSocks are Removed from the Vehicle?
AutoSock is likely to be wet and probably dirty. They should be put back in their storage bag using the gloves provided. After reaching the destination, AutoSocks should be dried and the dirt shaken out, and can be machine washed. AutoSock is reusable, easy to store and should be put back in the vehicle for the next time a rare snow or ice storm arrives!
NOTE: AutoSock is not considered a traction device in severe snow conditions and cannot be substituted for chains for travel through mountain passes.

Unexpected winter weather can create driving conditions demanding more traction than conventional tires -- or even snow treads -- can provide. But tire chains are bulky to store and can be difficult to put on in cold, snowy weather. Now there is an easy-to-use alternative to chains: Designed in Norway, AutoSock is a new and innovative lightweight fabric-based, temporary traction aid for cars and trucks that is easy to mount and gets a grip on slippery surfaces as snow and ice. AutoSock, a high-technology textile tire covering, utilizes specially patterned fibers that optimize grip on slick surfaces by managing the thin layer of water on top of ice and snow. Through its weaving pattern and thousands of small fibers AutoSock clings to snow and ice, increasing vehicle traction, improving safety and adding to driver confidence.

With AutoSock, you won’t experience the rattles and bumpy ride associated with tire chains, and it is approved for speeds up to 30 mph. AutoSock is easy to install following these simple steps: Stop the vehicle and apply the emergency brake, fit AutoSock to the drive wheels of the vehicle, starting at the top of the tire and working downwards. Then, stretch the elastic band over the top of the tire to the inside of the tire, tighten the crossing strap, and move the vehicle approximately 3 feet and pull the remainder of the AutoSock into position. AutoSock automatically self-centers when you begin driving. When you’ re back on snow-free roads, slip the AutoSock off and slip it back into the included storage bag.

After use, AutoSock should be put back in the storage bag until the destination is reached. Then they can be machine-washed and put back in the bag, ready to go for the next snow or ice storm. Note: AutoSock is not meant for severe snow conditions, and cannot be substituted for chains for travel through mountain passes. The High Performance AutoSock accommodates performance tire sizes (typically OEM sizes for sports cars, SUVs, luxury cars, or +1/+2 wheel and tire aftermarket setups). It is also safe on aftermarket wheels and can be used with electronic traction control systems and ABS. For standard tires, use AutoSock Standard

Ditch Your Snow Chain And Put On Autosocks

Links Autosock Products : http://astore.amazon.com/buy-autosock-20

There are always a few products at SEMA that lack glitz and glamour but are all about pure function; the AutoSock is one of these. Developed in Norway, the AutoSock is a great alternative to bulky snow chains and spiders. The AutoSock is made up of “high-technology” fibers. These fibers provide additional grip in snowy and icy conditions. The AutoSocks are simple to install. Simply slip them over the drive wheels as far as possible, then pull forward a tad and pull them over the rest of the wheels. The AutoSocks are self-centering and will even works with studded tires.According to their website, the AutoSocks are more effective than snow tires, and even more effective than chains in certain situations. But the big advantage of the Sock system is that they can be fitted to cars that have minimal clearance between the tire and wheel-well unlike snow chains. Because there are no straps, hooks or bolts holding them in place, they also work well with alloy wheels that could be damaged by spiders or chains. The AutoSocks are machine washable and come with their own carrying case to keep your trunk dry. Worried about durability? The AutoSock has passed the same durability and distance tests as snow chains.
The AutoSock is not available in the US as of yet, but look for it to be on the market in the not too distant future.
